Rundle wraps up 2020

“We must take the lessons learnt from 2020 and focus on the new year in a unified and combined effort.”

Although there have been few highlights for Ward 19’s Clr Bill Rundle, one thing that stood out for him the most was how the community of Edenvale stood together during 2020.

“This year was a very tough year for everybody and I have great empathy for sole proprietors who had to reinvent the wheel to stay alive.

“2020 was incredibly tough on the country and it will take a few years before things go back to normal.”

Rundle said many projects which were meant to start this year, such as the multi-million-rand Eastleigh Spruit project, were put on hold to assist with Covid-19 relief.

He said some projects which were completed were the upgrading of the Central Avenue Bridge and the resurfacing of some of the avenues.

Rundle said before lockdown, service delivery was already a problem in Edenvale, and lockdown just worsened the problem.

“Roads and parks were not maintained. The HODs, supervisors and MMCs need to be held accountable,” said Rundle.

“Although this year was mainly about putting out fires, what was amazing to see was the community spirit of Edenvale.

“It was truly amazing to see the community come together with the feeding schemes which were organised with the Methodist and Baptist churches in town. The community came together in true Edenvale spirit.

“We must take the lessons learnt from 2020 and focus on the new year in a unified and combined effort.”

Rundle encouraged community members to speak out and have their say at public participation meetings.

“At the meetings and on the municipal chat groups it is the same faces and the same names. More people must get involved and have a say.”

Rundle wished community members a merry Christmas and happy holidays.

“I hope everyone stays safe and obeys the law. It is easier to comply than fight the virus.”

Rundle encouraged community members to keep the sense of community during the holidays.

“If an elderly neighbour is alone these holidays, invite them over for Christmas and make their holidays a little special this year.”
