UPDATE: Edenglen SGB investigation leads to seven learners suspended

Seven learners from Edenglen High School were suspended following an investigation by the school governing body (SGB).

The seven Grade 10 learners from Edenglen High were found to be involved in the fight which occurred outside the school property on November 10.

On November 11, Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi visited the school to meet with management, school leadership, community stakeholders and SGB after a video of a street fight emerged on social media.

In the video, learners can be seen punching and kicking each other on the street and pavement of Edenglen, although some children were in civvies most were in school uniform.

The purpose of the meeting was to determine a way forward and determine how the school and the SAPS were handling the situation.

Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the MEC, said a disciplinary hearing was scheduled for November 19 and 20.

“Six of the seven learners who were involved in the fight tested positive for marijuana,” said Mabona.

“One of the suspended learners was found with a knife, which he indicated was for his protection.”

He said the SAPS is continuing with its investigation.
