WATCH: Isandovale residents find unusual guest in garden

“Get all dogs and people indoors and do not agitate the primate, call your nearest SPCA.”

An Isandovale resident had a run-in with an uninvited guest on her property after she noticed a vervet monkey eating fruit from her garden this morning.

Belinda Campbell said she had just put fruit out for the bird when she noticed the primate on December 1.

“I was having my morning coffee and carrying on with my day and opened my curtains when I noticed the monkey.”

The shocked Belinda could not believe her eyes.

“It was in the garden for a few seconds, it tried to pull the orange I had put out for the bird off the tree and then fled the property,” said Belinda.

Edenvale SPCA Inspector Jade Nel said the SPCA started receiving reports about the primate on November 28.

The last report we had was that it was near the Barbara Road Bridge.

She said most of the calls alerting the SPCA of the monkey’s location were made once it had left the resident’s property.

Nel said although she has caught a primate before she said a lot needs to be considered before the primate is captured.

“We need to take all variables into consideration and consult specialists from organisations such as Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital or Monkey Helpline,” explained Nel.

She advised residents to close all windows and doors if the monkey comes onto their property.

“Get all dogs and people indoors and do not agitate the primate, call your nearest SPCA,”

Nel said the authorities need to know where the monkey is in real-time so a plan can be devised.

Although she said it was strange to find a vervet monkey in Edenvale it was too early to tell if the primate was somebody’s pet.
