Holy Rosary School turned 80 this year, and to mark this special occasion the school held a Mass of Thanksgiving where Bishop Duncan Tsoke was the celebrant.

Guests of honour included Holy Rosary sisters, St Therese parish priest Fr Zweli Mlotshwa, family of the Hurly brothers, the school’s trust and board, the first head girl of Holy Rosary, past learners, past principals from HRS, principals from neighbouring Catholic Schools, parents and senior girls.

“We celebrated and gave thanks for our founder Bishop Joseph Shanahan and the courageous missionary sisters of the Holy Rosary, who braved the dangerous journey from Ireland to South Africa in the middle of the Second World War,” said Kenda Knowles, the school’s marketing manager.

She said Richard and Henry Hurly, residents of Edenvale at the time, owned a piece of land next to the Catholic parish church.

The brothers donated the land and a cottage situated on it to the school.

“This cottage was in the middle of what was then a veld, and immediately became home to the Sisters.”

Kenda said the Hurly brothers built the first convent house, which was initially built to house refugees, but later donated it to Bishop Shanahan and the sisters.

“So the school grew from humble beginnings in 1940 with nine learners in a small convent to over 900 learners today on numerous properties.”
