Two dead, 14 injured after minibus taxi crashes into N3 barricade in Bedfordview

“The cause of the crash is still a subject of investigations by the EMPD, however, preliminary information on scene showed that the driver lost control of the vehicle when the rear wheel came off before crashing into metal barriers.”

Two people died while 14 others sustained serious injuries on Monday (November 16) after the minibus taxi they were travelling in, crashed into the metal road barrier on the N3 freeway northbound between Gillooly’s Interchange and Linksfield Road off-ramp.

According to Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) media liaison officer William Ntladi, the DEMS fire and rescue team from Bedfordview received the call at about 5.30am.

“DEMS responded to the scene and found a taxi lying on its side with two patients still trapped in the front seat.

“Collectively, both medical officers and rescue crews rendered pre-hospital medical treatment to 14 people, including the driver, before transportation to Edenvale Hospital for further care.

“Two adults, a male and a female were declared dead on scene by paramedics due to severe head and upper body injuries.

“The rescue team had to use specialised hydraulic rescue tools (Jaws of Life) to recover the bodies from the wreckage. Forensic Pathologists transported the bodies to an appropriate facility in Germiston.
