Residents offer support to Village View guard

“Please let this be another reminder to not wear expensive watches and jewellery to shopping centres or in public.”

A security guard at Village View Shopping Centre in Bedfordview was shot during an armed robbery at the centre on Wednesday night last week.

Spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS Capt Andre de Jager said an unknown number of suspects entered a restaurant at the centre at around 6pm.

“They held one patron at gun point and took his luxury watch before fleeing the scene,” he said.

De Jager said the security guard was shot when the suspects exited the restaurant building.

“He was airlifted to hospital in a stable condition.”

Bedfordview SAPS opened a case of attempted murder and robbery.

“The case will be investigated by the provincial task team,” de Jager said.

Bedfordview CPF chairperson Gavin Henry said multiple resources responded to the scene.

“Please let this be another reminder to not wear expensive watches and jewellery to shopping centres or in public,” Henry said.

He said the community was concerned about the guard following the incident.

“The BCPF followed up with the guard’s employer and was advised that he was in ICU at Milpark Hospital. The bullet grazed the guard’s spine.

“Residents also expressed the desire to make a contribution towards the SSG Security guard,” he said.

The Bedfordview CPF has since added an option for donations towards the guard to its donations platform.

“We thank the residents for the compassion they showed and hope that they will support this fund-raising drive,” said Henry.

He added that all donations made are tax deductible and a Section 18A tax certificate will automatically be generated by the system.

Residents who would like to make a donation can visit https://bcpf.co.za/donate and select the SSG Security Guard tab when making their donation.
