In the hopes of reducing the number of hungry children in SA, Dr Ivan Jardine from Bedfordview Life Gardens is on a mission to teach others how to sustain themselves.

Founder of #ProjectPossible, Ivan believes it is possible to alleviate hunger and poverty through God’s law of abundance.

“Covid-19 has worsened the hunger and poverty situation by tanking the economy and people losing jobs and hope,” said Ivan.

“Getting involved with Project Possible takes some time but will not cost too much. It will feed many people and start to give them hope and excitement like it did with me and everyone I shared the concepts with.”

Ivan, an ENT surgeon, said although it is easy to be a problem-picker, he chooses to be a problem-seeker.

The idea behind Ivan’s project is to teach people how to germinate seeds, prepare the soil and plant the seeds so they have food for the future.

Ivan said by doing this not only will community members be able to feed themselves but they will be able to teach others how to feed themselves.

In recent months, Ivan hosted several workshops explaining how to germinate seeds, prepare the soil and provide them with sufficient knowledge for them to plant the seeds at home.

“By no stretch of the imagination am I a gardener, but I have been able to germinate vegetables from seeds to seedlings then plant it in the gardens,” said Ivan.

“If I can do it many can and will do it much better.”

Ivan said by focusing on surrounding neighbourhoods and sharing the skill with other community members, we will help one another.

In the future, Ivan would like to establish a training facility with several lecture halls whereby community members can be taught a variety of topics, such as composting, the importance of bees, recycling, propagating fruit trees and growing vegetables.

He said by focusing on all these topics community members would be able to generate an income from sustainable farming and gardening.
