Domestic violence in the spotlight for SAPS

Although no serious incidents of crime have been reported, the Edenvale SAPS management of the station hopes to draw the community’s attention to domestic violence.

Although no serious incidents of crime have been reported, the Edenvale SAPS management of the station hopes to draw the community’s attention to domestic violence.

Edenvale SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Jacob Mashile, said several cases of domestic violence were reported to the station during October.
“The cases either involved some form of assault or trauma,” said Mashile.

Although Mashile attributed a variety of reasons for domestic violence, he said the causes could include financial pressure caused by the effects of the Covid-19 lockdown. He said all cases involve romantic partners.

“If you notice your partner becoming aggressive and there is a history of domestic violence, contact the police,” said Mashile.
Mashile said although police cannot intervene unless a crime is committed they can notify social workers and the Department of Social Development.

“Community members need to try and be as calm as possible. If they know the situation is going to deteriorate they should get away.
“If the victim, especially women, cannot get away from the situation or their partner they should have emergency numbers (112/10111) on hand.

“When couples are having a marital dispute, they should speak to each other. If they need help, they should go to their church or a counsellor and ask for assistance.”

Mashile said because domestic violence often occurs behind closed doors it is a difficult crime to police.

He said if family members or friends suspect someone they know is a victim of domestic violence it needs to be reported as soon as possible.

He encouraged victims to keep photographs and video and audio recordings to show social workers.

Signs to look out for include the victim lashing out at loved ones unprovoked, possible bruises and unexplained bruises in the victim’s body.

To report a crime phone 10111, 0860010111 or 011 553 8600 (Edenvale Police Station).
