Edenvale and Bedfordview are set to take to the stage in the hopes of shedding some light on climate change and the impact it is having on the environment.

The performers from Rising Stars Drama Academy, led by Charlene Bender and Caron Kleynhans, will perform Rainbow Kids. This is a book written by Charlene.

The book tells the story of Sipho, a young boy who lives with his grandmother but is being affected by climate change daily.

After not catching any fish for dinner, Sipho is encouraged by his grandmother to seek assistance from the elders in parliament.

“Along the way, he meets children from across the world who find themselves similarly affected by climate change,” said Charlene.

“The book discusses topics such as poaching, the ivory and rhino horn trade, oil spills and landfills.”

Charlene said although things don’t go quite according to plan at parliament, the children meet Dr Ivan Jardine from Project Possible.

The project hopes to alleviate hunger then poverty in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.

Growing up in Komani, formerly Queenstown, Charlene has always had a strong connection to the environment.

“As a child, I already noticed extreme weather patterns and soil erosion happening around us.

“My grandmother would often tell me stories of how the weather had drastically changed from when she was a child.”

Charlene, a former choreographer and dancer, said she partnered with Caron several years ago and put on several plays together.

“We have a love for the performing arts and we love seeing the children grow and become more confident on stage.”

Charlene said five of her and Caron’s performers have won items over the years at the Redham International Performing Arts Competition and celebrated one overall winner.

Although a fee for the tickets to the play is yet to be determined, Charlene highlighted that a portion of the funds raised will go towards Lambano Sanctuary in Germiston.

Ivan said he hopes to also establish a vegetable garden at the sanctuary to ensure it has a sustainable source of food.
