German club still going strong

Filled with tradition and proud of its heritage Edenvale’s German Club is a home away from home for all.

Hidden in the industrial area, that is Eastleigh, lies a hidden gem tucked away among factories and warehouses.

Filled with tradition and proud of its heritage Edenvale’s German Club is a home away from home for all.

With welcoming smiles and firm handshakes guests will be welcomed into the doors of the German Club and the family.

Founded in 1952 by Albert Werner Aab, the club’s original objective was to cultivate and promote social and sporting activities among the predominantly German-speaking community at the time.

With an initial property size of 15146 hectares, Aab bought the property; a portion of freehold farm Rietfontein number 9 for 400 British Pounds.

Chairperson Marie Koch said over the years portions of the property were sold off as development in the surrounding area occurred.

Marie said the club started with four friends who used to meet and play cards together regularly.

She said over the years the club grew into what it is today.

The club has several halls, a bowling alley, a stage for productions, a swimming pool for children and a large open area for children to enjoy themselves.

Celebrating its 68th anniversary earlier this year the club remains strong and alive.

“Today the club is not just for Germans. It is for everyone and anyone can come to the club and enjoy themselves,” she said.

“The club is more than just being German, it is about family, friendship and coming together in a safe environment.”

Artur Vock, committee member of the club, said besides promoting community engagement the club hopes to revive German traditions in the community.

“We want to keep traditions going and we want to bring traditions back to the community.”

“As a result of the pandemic, the club had to reassess its situation to ensure that it kept its doors open.

“Originally the club leased the restaurant and bar out to a private company but the committee has since assumed control of the two operations under the management of Erich Paris,” said Marie.

Club membership costs R350 per annum and provides members with a 10 per cent discount on all charges.
