New sister to take the reigns at care centre

Jean officially joined the care centre family on October 2 following the death of Sr Leigh on July 9.

Sr Jean Mitton has a passion for helping others and hopes to continue lending a hand while working at Edenvale Care Centre Hospice.

Leigh died at the age of 62 after suffering several health complications.

While at the centre, Jean hopes to uphold and continue providing high levels of care to the patients while mentoring and guiding the staff and nursing students.

The Sunnyrock resident has several decades worth of health care experience, both in SA and internationally.

The 71-year-old completed her training at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in 1970, where she worked in the theatre before leaving just before 1980 to go overseas.

After she returned, Jean worked at several health-care facilities, including Arbor Village, Life Roseacres Hospital, Stepping Stone Hospice and Care Services.

The sister described herself as a person who enjoys being hands-on with patients and doing the day-to-day work.

“When it comes to helping others, I am a seed planter,” described Jean.

“Some people may not want to change their mindset so all you can do is offer them some insight and give them a different perspective.”

Jean looks forward to working at the care centre and forming good relationships with the surrounding community.

“I am sure I will do a good job while I am at the centre.”

Community members can also look forward to an upcoming jumble sale set to held by the centre in mid-October.
