Edenvale SAPS partnered with Edenvale High School's dog handler to conduct a recent visit to Eastleigh Primary School.

Edenvale SAPS partnered with Edenvale High School’s dog handler to conduct a recent visit to Eastleigh Primary School.

The visit, which formed part of the SAPS’ safer schools programme, saw SAPS officers and Edenvale High School’s K9 handler Velly Hlongo conduct a search.

Edenvale SAPS spokesperson Sgt Jacob Mashile said nothing illicit was found at the school and this will be done on a continuous basis.

Principal of Eastleigh Primary, Belinda Cooke-Tonnesen thanked the SAPS and Dr Larry Harmer, principal of Edenvale High School, for their assistance.

“School-based crime prevention is intended to enrich the participation of police officers in promoting safe and orderly school environments,” said Mashile.

He said school safety is often a critical obstacle to learning.

“Crime, violence and abuse affect all aspects of our community. Schools are not always free from fear, intimidation or victimisation.”

Mashile encouraged schools to establish and maintain a safe school committee comprised of internal stakeholders of the school (SGB and staff members) and external roleplayers (SAPS).
