Robbers collide with CIT van head-on in Esther Park

“Once the van came to a standstill the suspects, armed with rifles and pistols, shot at it and ordered the two Fidelity staff members out.”

A Fidelity cash van was brought to a standstill and robbed of an undisclosed amount of money in Esther Park after suspects collided head-on with it.

The van which was travelling between Longmeadow and Spartan was robbed on Parkland Drive this morning (August 17).

Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, said the van was robbed by approximately 20 suspects travelling in two white Toyota Fortuner’s, a white Audi A4 and a silver Audi A4.

She said the van was brought to a standstill after suspects drove a Mercedes into it.

The Mercedes used by the robbers to bring the cash in transit van to a standstill on August 17.

“Once the van came to a standstill the suspects, armed with rifles and pistols, shot at it and ordered the two Fidelity staff members out.”

“A rifle and a 9mm pistol were taken from them.”

“The driver and crew member were ordered to lay on the ground while doing so, they heard as the suspects used explosives opening the van.”

Tsotsotso said shortly after the explosion the suspects fled the scene with an unknown amount of money.

“One Fortuner and the white A4 fled the area towards Kempton Park while the other Fortuner and the silver A4 fled in the direction of the P91.”

Tsotsotso said the two occupants of the van were transported to a hospital for injuries related to the collision with the Mercedes.

She said they were in a serious but stable condition.

Although the suspects fled the scene police are investigating cases related to cash in transit heist including attempted murder, robbery and robbery of firearms and ammunition.

Tsotsotso appealed to community members who may know anything about the crime to contact the police.
