Failing infrastructure frustrations for Ward 20 councillor

According to the councillor, two of the biggest issues in the area are potholes and blocked sewage lines.

Persistent infrastructure failures in Bedfordview have ward councillor Jill Humphreys pulling her hair out.

According to the councillor, two of the biggest issues in the area are potholes and blocked sewage lines.

“The large pothole at the intersection of Nicol and Arbroath roads is a result of repairs to a burst pipe,” she said.

Pipeline repairs were completed around two months ago, yet the road has not been rehabilitated.

“It is the responsibility of the water department to rehabilitate roads after repairs. Instead, the road is simply left until the roads department repairs the damage,” Humphreys said.

She added that this was just one of the bigger potholes in the area that needed to be repaired by the City of Ekurhuleni.

She said the failure of essential infrastructure is adversely affecting business too.

An ongoing sewerage leak outside a service station on Boeing Road East is a result of what Humphreys suspects is either a severely clogged or collapsed pipeline.

“This has been going on for the last six months. The city clears the pipeline and the next day it’s leaking sewerage again. This is affecting business because the constant stench makes it almost impossible to conduct day-to-day operations,” she said.

She said the city would need to do a proper investigation into the cause of the leak to resolve it once and for all.

The NEWS sent two separate inquiries to the city detailing issues surrounding the pothole on Nicol Road and the ongoing sewerage leak on Boeing Road East.

The inquiries, along with related questions, were sent to the city on August 4 and comment was requested by August 7.
