According to the organiser, the drive-by baby shower raised about R8 000 in donations.

Drive-by baby showers are now popular due to social distancing regulations.

Bernadine Scheepers used such a drive-by to help El-Shammah Home for Abandoned Babies and Place of Safety in Primrose on August 2.

She said she called the home to donate two packets of nappies after hearing they suffered a burglary and then had a change of heart and decided to do more by initiating the fund-raiser.

Bernadine thanked Vicky Volschenk who helped her gather a group of motorcyclists.

“The motorcycling community made a huge difference. I phoned Vicky and told her we need to rally and get the home the help they need.

“Everything was planned in only a week.

“I was blown away by what was accomplished in such a short time,” said Bernadine.

According to the organiser, the drive-by baby shower raised about R8 000 in donations.

Alistair and Merencia Scholtz, owners of the home, thanked the donors as they left their donations at the gate.

Alistair said the home was blessed with all the support.

Things that were stolen during the burglary at the home included a laptop, power tools and 5 000 nappies.

According to the project assistant, Ronel Ludick, the tools were used to build furniture which generated income for the home.

“I never thought we were going to receive so much support,” said Bernadine.Bikers, security companies, neighbours, community members, organisations and community stakeholders flooded the home’s gate with food parcels, baby clothing, nappies and other donations.

Circinus Security Services, AfriForum representatives, various motorcycling clubs from Ekurhuleni and surrounding areas all convoyed to the home for the fund-raiser.

Ronel also thanked Record Industrial for contributing towards the fund-raiser.

Bernadine said she has received several messages from people who are in need of food and baby formula.

“There is definitely a big need in the community.”
