Eastgate gives back to its community

"It is ever important to be doing what we can for our community."

Eastgate Shopping Centre, in collaboration with its Farm District, is paying it forward to those impacted by the pandemic with it’s “buy one, donate one” fresh produce box project.

This will be done while offering shoppers a wonderful opportunity to receive free, immune-boosting, fresh produce from the farm by spending only R200 at the shopping centre according to Alana Hoskin, Eastgate marketing manager.

“Liberty Two Degrees launched its #CreateTomorrow campaign across its co-owned shopping centres as a way to bring about human action and conversation, while giving hope and showing empathy to those most affected during these uncertain times,” she said.

Hoskin said Eastgate believes in the notion that acts of kindness and compassion in a time of crisis goes a long way.

“The “buy one, donate one” fresh produce box project lends towards the shopping centre’s campaign, and commitment to #CreateTomorrow for its community. For every mixed box of fresh produce bought at the centre’s aquaponic Farm District, one is donated to the local soup kitchen run by the area’s Methodist Church.”

She said the fresh produce box costs only R150 and could include tomatoes, chilies, cucumbers, garlic, chives, spring onion, watercress and spinach.

All the produce grown at the centre’s rooftop aquaponic farm is organic and as per Hoskin, is high in nutrient value, enabling the centre to provide wholesome and sustainable meals to the local soup kitchen on a daily basis.

“The “buy one, donate one” initiative leverages the support of the centre’s customers, and together, impactful contributions are being made,” she said.

During this pandemic, Hoskin said it is crucial to ensure the public are taking care of their immune systems.

Therefore, with this, she said Eastgate extended its hand by offering shoppers an unmissable opportunity to get a Farm District voucher, by spending R200 at the centre, which then entitles them to redeem the veg of the day, to take home.

“It is ever important to be doing what we can for our community.

“By providing those left vulnerable, with fresh organic produce to create wholesome meals from is rewarding for us at Eastgate.”

“We are grateful to be making an impact by creating tomorrow, today, along with our shoppers,” said Kelly Belman, general manager of Eastgate.

To get involved, or to redeem your “veg of the day”, visit Eastgate’s Farm District which can be accessed via Nicol Road at entrance 10 on the roof top.
