65th anniversary for Bedfordview couple

Before sharing their story, Ray and Margaret first celebrated the previously published couple Ernie and Jean Bailey from Edenglen.

In a recent edition, the NEWS published an article about a local couple who had recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Ray van Wyk (90), well known as ‘Ray the moniker’, was motivated to share a little about his love story with his wife of 65 years, Margaret (85).
Before sharing their story, Ray and Margaret first celebrated the previously published couple Ernie and Jean Bailey from Edenglen.
“We congratulate them and wish them many more happy years together,” said Ray.
Due to lockdown, the van Wyk’s could not celebrate their milestone.
“Our 65th anniversary passed quietly, under lockdown, about a month ago.”
The elderly couple cemented their love for each other on the romantic coast of South Africa, a long time before many were born.
“We were married in St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town on May 14, 1955.”
The couple had two daughters.
“We have a daughter, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild in America and another daughter and two grandchildren in Canada,” said Ray.
At the end of 1956, Ray, who was then employed by the then Cape Times which later became Cape and Transvaal Printers, was transferred to their newly established Johannesburg branch.
Ray explained they settled in Germiston and moved to Bedfordview 35 years ago.
After many years of working in a printing company, the couple ventured into a successful printing busy of their own.
“Margaret and I established our own printing works in 1964 and serviced some of the larger and well-known industries in Wadeville and surrounding areas.”
The couple retired from the business 25 years ago.
Sharing a life together was not enough as the pair also share a birthday month.
“ I turned 90 on April 20 and Margaret celebrated her 85th birthday on the 23rd of the same month,” added Ray.
“We look forward to many more happy years ahead.”
