No serious crimes reported but DUI expected to increase – Mashile

“Besides those arrested for driving under the influence, the residents of Edenvale appear to be consuming alcohol responsibly.”

With the reopening of liquor stores under Level 3 regulations, Edenvale SAPS identified a noticeable increase in the number of motorists driving under the influence of alcohol.
Edenvale SAPS spokesperson Sgt Jacob Mashile said several motorists were arrested between June 3 and June 10.

“Most of the motorists were arrested during roadblocks organised by law enforcement.”

“Besides those arrested for driving under the influence, the residents of Edenvale, however, appear to be consuming alcohol responsibly.
“As far as I am aware there have been no cases of assault, domestic violence or other cases often related to the consumption of alcohol reported to the station.”

Mashile said he expects the number of driving under the influence cases to increase and appealed to the community to consume alcohol responsibly.

“Community members should only consume alcohol at home during this period,” highlighted Mashile.
“If you are intoxicated and need to drive then ask someone for a lift or make use of an e-hailing service.”
