Edenvale SAPS ready for Level 3

Edenvale SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Jacob Mashile, said the decrease in regulations contraventions could be related to the community better understanding the regulations.

As SA moves towards Level 3 lockdown, Edenvale SAPS noticed an increase of compliance from community members.

Between May 20 and May 27, no community members were detained for the contravention of lockdown regulations.

Edenvale SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Jacob Mashile, said the decrease in regulations contraventions could be related to the community better understanding the regulations.

“Community members understand that the situation is serious.”

In addition to the improved compliance of regulations, Edenvale SAPS identified a decrease of armed robberies.

Mashile told the NEWS the robberies were occurring in sector two as pedestrians were walking either to or from the shops.

The robberies, which occurred between 12 noon and 6pm, saw community members robbed of their valuables and anything they had bought from the shops.

“To combat these crimes police visibility was increased in the hotspots,” explained Mashile.

“The station also believes community members are making use of the advice provided by the SAPS and are being vigilant.”

Mashile said despite the positive news the precinct has noticed an increase in common theft.

He said residential properties are targeted by suspects who gain entry to the property by climbing over walls or fences.

“The crimes usually occur during the daytime while residents are not home.”

Mashile said suspects have stolen gardening equipment and bicycles.

He highlighted that the increase in crime could be related to community members returning to work as businesses reopen.

“Any loose equipment or items stored outside should be packed away in a secure area such as a garden shed. Although restrictions are set to be lifted, Mashile said there should not be a spike in the crime rate in the precinct.”

Various regulations and the restriction of movement will still be in place.
