Edenvale and Bennies Cubs and Scouts lend a helpful hand during lockdown

The Northrand Scout District has eight scout groups in the greater Bedfordview and Edenvale area.

Cubs and Scouts from around Bedfordview and Edenvale have been involved in virtual programmes during lockdown.

Scouts districts commissioner Andrew Campbell said Cubs from St Benedict’s Cub Pack put together a “thank you” collage for essential service workers.

While Cubs from the 1st Edenvale pack ran a virtual camp, where Andrew said parents taught Cubs about stargazing, cooking and camping in their gardens.
Andrew added these programmes included building rockets, cooking focaccia bread and making rafts, which they put on swimming pools.

“They have also been very busy completing badges and other advancement tasks.

“Scouts Michael Westhoff from 1st Bedfordview and Chris Parks from 1st Kengray completing their final interview for their Springbok Scout Awards.
“This is the highest award a Scout can achieve,” said Andrew.

Concerning the Springbok Award, he said it will be formally conferred on the Scouts once lockdown ends.
As per Andrew, rovers and adult leaders have been involved in packing food parcels through the solidarity fund.

“In a single day over 6 000 food packages were put together for the needy.

“The rovers took leftovers not fit for human consumption and delivered two vehicle loads to the SPCA for distribution to needy farm animals.”

Rovers from the Village Rover Crew also put together a virtual camp for Scouts, which Andrew said was attended by Scouts from around Gauteng.
“One of the highlights of the lockdown was a “Jamboree on the Internet” put together by the World Scout Bureau.

“Our Scouts interacted with Scouts from around the world, finding out about their lockdown experiences,” said Andrew.
Whilst everyone is missing their friends, Andrew said it is safe to say scouting is alive and well in the Northrand District.
