Level four lockdown movement a concern for Bedfordview SAPS

"Serious crimes have decreased. We have had a few reported cases on contact crimes, such as theft of cellphones,"

Bedfordview SAPS has still been experiencing a decrease in all crimes, although, due to the lockdown shifting from level five to four, the station has made a few non-compliance arrests.

Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson Capt André de Jager reiterates in general the crime level is much lower due to the Covid-19 regulations.

De Jager, with the station, is exceptionally pleased trio crimes have decreased, such as vehicle hijacking and business and home robberies.

“Serious crimes have decreased. We have had a few reported cases on contact crimes, such as theft of cellphones,” said de Jager.

Due to level four, de Jager hopes the decrease remains the same, as with the new level comes a bit movement and is a concern for the station.

“Patrolling of sector vehicles are still continuing as planned. They are sensitised on a daily basis to make sure they are policing the Covid-19 regulations,” said de Jager.

This is done, as per de Jager, by stopping residents and asking for permits and reasons for travel.

“If residents do not have the proper documentation with them, we will proceed with arrests for contravention. We have already made arrests on this matter, mainly on having no permits” said de Jager.

Recently, de Jager said they have also made two arrests for the selling of alcohol, which is prohibited during lockdown.

De Jager said the station does not give out fines concerning interventions.

“A number of residents think it is okay to bend the rules stated by government. If you are going out for walks at the stated times, you need to adhere to it.”

He also urges residents to adhere to the curfew from 8pm to 5am as stated by government, where no movement is allowed at all.

“You will be arrested if you are not adhering to these regulations,” said de Jager.

He said the station takes policing these regulations very seriously.

“Overall, Bedfordview residents have been following regulations by wearing masks and social distancing when they are outside,” said de Jager.

If arrests are made during the lockdown, de Jager said they are tested and sanitised.

“If suspects have a high fever, we will deal with it accordingly,” said de Jager.
