Wastewater treatment plant to be commissioned on Vaal River

The Vaal River sewage crisis project taken on by the Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu, is one she can be proud of.

Under her watch the crisis has turned around and the Vaal River system has been saved.

Working hand in hand with the community and business sector in the Sedibeng District Municipality, Sisulu fixed the Vaal which was declared a disaster area at the beginning of the year.

A South African National Defence Force (SANDF) unit was deployed to clean the sewage spillage in the Vaal Dam and ERWAT has been appointed by the government to take over the SANDF’s work on the Vaal River.

#SisuluAntiCorruption| ERWAT will be wrapping up their contracted work in June 2020. As from July 2020, the Department will be assuming the overall management and implementation of the Vaal River System Project.

Sisulu said the seven cases handled by the Human Rights Commission were dropped when it became clear that the department had prioritised the Vaal.

“We are glad to say we are now commissioning a wastewater treatment plant,” Sisulu said, at a media briefing earlier today.
