Covid-19: Decrease in domestic violence figures

Maj Gen L Rabie said cases were down by more than half.

Domestic violence is decreasing.
This number is a welcome light in the dark clouds surrounding Covid-19.

During a joint meeting on April 29 aimed at considering various issues around the lockdown Maj Gen L Rabie from the South African Police Service said compared to the national figure of 8 391 reported cases from March 29 to April 18, last year, reported cases were down by more than half.
In the same period this year only 2 946 cases were reported.
In his law enforcement and operational plan presentation, Rabie said in total 56 bottle stores countrywide have been broken into.
Two liquor wholesalers, two liquor outlets (for example, Tops, Shoprite Liquor or Checkers Liquor), 78 taverns and shebeens and 26 pubs and bars also fell victim to criminal activities.
This comes on the backdrop of visible policing throughout the country.

On a daily basis, 17 322 police members, 4 470 SANDF members, 3 838 metro and traffic officials and 1 722 Department of Health workers are on the frontline of the fight against the deadly Covid-19 virus.
In total 191 roadblocks and 681 vehicle checkpoints are manned each day.
From the start of the lockdown 4 771 roadblocks were active and 17 025 vehicles checked.
The Department of Justice has been kept on their toes with 48 388 new cases referred to them.
The highest number of cases comes from Gauteng, which leads with 15 373, the Western Cape is second with 5 437 cases.
Law enforcement agencies and government workers are also kept on the straight and narrow.

From the start of the lockdown up to April 19, five councillors, two members from the Department of Correctional Services, nine workers from the Department of Health, 97 police officers, one worker from the Department of Social Development, two traffic officers, 74 members from the SANDF, and one law enforcement officer were arrested.
