Crime shows a decrease in Cleveland

"Most of the armed robberies have stopped completely however one occurs per week."

Like other police stations, Cleveland SAPS have noticed a change in the behaviour of criminals as the lockdown continues.

According to Capt Jordaan, Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, crime in the precinct decreased significantly.

Arrests, however, have been made in connection to community members disregarding the lockdown.

“Police activities have drastically increased in all areas so much so that even criminals can not leave their homes.”

Under normal circumstance some of the most common crimes reported to the station include:

•Hijackings

•Residential robberies

•Business robberies

•Burglaries

•Theft of motor vehicles

•Assaults

“Most of the armed robberies have stopped completely.”

Jordaan explained that although there are fewer cases, crimes such as business burglary and assaults are still reported to the station.

He identified some of the assault cases were related to domestic violence.

Jordaan said all assault-related cases and domestic violence case had stabilised for the time being.

He emphasised that victims of domestic violence need to report the matter to the police.

“This is a serious concern to us and we need to stop violence against our women and children.”

Jordaan advised community members to stay at home.

“Please don`t make our job difficult by going out of your house unnecessarily.”

He said the sooner people cooperate the sooner the pandemic.will be curbed.
