Covid-19: Decline in domestic violence in Edenvale, Sebenza from previous lockdown weeks

The number of incidents related to domestic abuse in Edenvale and Sebenza has shown a decrease, while criminal activity continues to remain low.

Edenvale and Sebenza SAPS spokespersons recently told the NEWS several domestic violence matters were brought to the stations’ attention.

The incidents, which occurred in the first week of the lockdown, were described by police as arguments which had escalated.

Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, said domestic violence cases decreased the second week of lockdown.

“I think couples are accustomed to each other and being in the same space now.”

Tsotsotso said crime continues to remain low in the area.

“No serious crimes were reported since the lockdown started, except for a business robbery in Spartan,” she said.

Edenvale spokesperson Sgt Jacob Mashile said in Edenvale things are under control.

He said the station has only tended to four incidents related to domestic violence since the lockdown started.

“I believe people have become more tolerant and understanding of each other.”

He explained police are continuing as normal, conducting roadblocks, patrols and stop-and-searches on top of enforcing the lockdown.

On April 14, Edenvale SAPS held a stop-and-search operation to ensure those travelling complied with regulations.

Mashile highlighted that since the lockdown started several individuals were arrested for non-compliance.

“Crime is still low, but there was a hijacking in sector one during the weekend of April 11 and 12.”

Although Mashile could not provide details on the case, he said the vehicle was recovered in Alexandra.

He urged community members to be vigilant, alert and not to stop for any unknown individuals.

Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson Capt André de Jager stated crime in the area also remains low.

“We are still carrying on as usual, maintaining the station, being vigilant in the area and assisting those who come to the station,” said de Jager.

De Jager emphasised that residents should continue adhering to the lockdown and stay at home.

“If you have to travel, please continue to do it responsibly by having your mask on. This is not optional anymore,”he said.
