Kitty’s 103rd birthday not dampened by lockdown

A birthday tea was held on her big day on April 5, complete with bunches of roses, a birthday banner, balloons and cake.

Despite the Covid-19 lockdown, Ron Smith Care Centre resident Kitty Venn’s 103rd birthday did not go unnoticed.

A birthday tea was held on her big day on April 5, complete with bunches of roses, a birthday banner, balloons and cake.

Kitty also received a beautiful purple orchid, courtesy of Schäffler’s Garden Nursery and Landscaping, which donated some of its flowering plants to the care centre before the lockdown.

Kitty moved into Rand Aid Association’s Elphin Lodge in 2000 after her husband died.

Fifteen years later, in her late 90s, she moved to the care centre in Elphin Lodge.

Born Doreen Ruby Mole in 1917 in Swakopmund, South West Africa (now Namibia), Kitty was the fourth of 12 children.

Kitty said she puts her longevity down to a life of happiness, eating everything in moderation, exercise (she played tennis well into her 80s), playing bridge and being blessed with a loving family.
