‘Assist the elderly during the lockdown’ – McKenzie

"Edenvale residents are very passionate about their community. I believe they will stand together to assist where they can."

In light of the national lockdown, the Illiondale Residents Association (IRA) has called upon the community to care for the elderly and vulnerable in Edenvale.

IRA chairperson and Illiondale resident Linda Mckenzie said to assist the elderly in Illiondale during the lockdown, a WhatsApp group was established.

“We have a passion and concern for the elderly and we were looking for a way to assist them.

“The group was established to assist the elderly with shopping and collection of medication.”

The 21-day lockdown implemented from March 27 hopes to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

Internationally, those affected the most by the virus are the elderly, the very young and those whose immune systems are compromised by chronic medical conditions, TB or HIV/Aids.

McKenzie said the elderly are a concern as many of them live alone or have no one to assist them.

“If an elderly resident does not have WhatsApp or is not on the group they should call upon their next-door neighbour for assistance.

“Edenvale residents are very passionate about their community. I believe they will stand together to assist where they can.

“This has been proven over and over again in the past,” emphasised McKenzie.

Although community members are encouraged to help those in need, they should remain indoors as much as possible.

“Community member should not endanger themselves or others unnecessarily.”

In a press briefing on March 25, MEC for Education and Youth Development Panyaza Lesufi said if community members are aware of a vulnerable citizen in need they should phone 0800 428 8364 or send an email to support@gauteng.gov.za
