Covid-19 – Residents question Bedfordview as Gauteng virus epicentre

"This doesn't add up" - Residents expressed their concerns on the minister’s statement.

Following a statement made by Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans on March 26, Bedfordview residents have since questioned the validity of the statement.

“During one of our briefings, we received information that the epicentre of this pandemic in Gauteng is Sandton and Bedfordview,” she said in response to a question about hot spot areas and deployments.

“Around Bedfordview, you have an informal settlement which is in Germiston called Cyril Ramaphosa informal settlement. So we have to do everything and focus on those areas.”

On the NEWS’ Facebook page, residents expressed their concerns on the minister’s statement.

Flourishing Tshina said “Unless there is another Bedfordview in Germiston, this might not be true. On March 26, we went to all the supposed testing centres in Bedfordview and Primrose, but none of them were operational or mentioned anything about having any cases. We were then sent to Edenvale for testing which was also impossible. This doesn’t add up. Life Bedford Gardens Hospital and Life Roseacres Hospital don’t have any testing centers so where exactly are those who fall within the epicentres being tested. Please go into the hospitals and confirm the facts”.

Nadean De Freitas also commented. “This is scary news. I hope they ramp up testing or this lockdown is pointless”.

Another comment by Joeline Rostoll said the Cyril Ramaphosa Informal Settlement is between Reiger Park and Elsburg, alluding to the settlement being nowhere close to Bedfordview.

“Their info misleading,” said Joeline.

Other residents felt the statement may be true.

“Bedfordview is quite big, this could be true. Quite scary we have been kept in the dark about it until today,” said Ncube Maroe-Alpha Thandanani.
