Covid-19 – ‘Epicentre of pandemic in Gauteng is Sandton and Bedfordview’ – Minister of Defence [WATCH]

“During one of our briefings, we received information that the epicentre of this pandemic in Gauteng is Sandton and Bedfordview.”

As South Africa enters the last few hours before the start of the national lockdown at midnight, a statement made by Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, during an SABC interview resulted in a flood of online comments as locals expressed concern.

“During one of our briefings, we received information that the epicentre of this pandemic in Gauteng is Sandton and Bedfordview,” she said in response to a question about hot spot areas and deployments.

“Once it is in Sandton, we should worry about our people in Alex and the conditions under which they live. Around Bedfordview, you have an informal settlement which is in Germiston called Cyril Ramaphosa informal settlement. So we have to do everything and focus on those areas.”

During a press briefing yesterday, Gauteng Premier David Makhura urged Gauteng residents to not leave the province before the lockdown.
