Residential robberies a concern for Edenvale SAPS

"Instead of going towards the gate to interact with the person rather shout from a distance to communicate."

Residents in sector one have been encouraged to remain vigilant and exercise caution when interacting with any individual wanting access to the properties.

This warning, from Edenvale SAPS, comes after several residential robberies occurred in the area.

Edenvale SAPS spokesperson Sgt Jacob Mashile said in one case a resident was robbed after he approached his perimeter gate to speak to four individuals.

Mashile said once close enough a firearm was pointed at the man and the suspects demanded access onto the property.

“A variety of valuables were taken by the suspects.”

Mashile urged community members to be cautious of anyone who approaches their gate.

“Instead of going towards the gate to interact with the person rather shout from a distance to communicate.”

“If the person claims to be working for a company ask them for their name, surname and a contact number to verify what they told you.”

Other tips include:

• To close your curtains at night to prevent suspects from observing activity inside the house.

• To always keep your garage door closed.

• Report any suspicious movement that can be a threat to you or your neighbours.

• Install security gates and keep them locked.

• Keep the entrance to your property clear of large plants to prevent suspects from being able to hide.

• Do not leave your wheelie bins outside the property unnecessarily.

• To make arrangements with neighbours when you plan to go away for holidays to keep an eye on your house.

“We appeal to the community to help us make our area safe and secure,” said Mashile.

Report any suspicious movement on 08600 10111 or 011 553 8600 or contact your security provider.
