What to do when lodging a complaint against EMPD

“The complainant should be prepared to provide a statement, indicating what transpired.”

To assist community members, EMPD provided them with the correct steps to follow when lodging a complaint against the department.

“Members of the community, who wish to lodge a complaint about the EMPD or metro police officers’ conduct, are at liberty to do so,” said EMPD spokesperson, acting Chief Sgt Kobeli Mokheseng.

Options provided to community members include:

1. Phoning the anti-corruption hotline of the City of Ekurhuleni 0800 102201.

Alternatively, dial 112 on a cell phone and request the SAPS anti-corruption unit, or phone the 10111 number.

2. On weekdays, plaintiffs can visit their nearest EMPD precinct between 8am and 3.30pm.

Once at the precinct, the plaintiff can request to speak to a precinct commander, a deputy commander or a senior officer in charge whom they can explain their ordeal too.

3. Visit EMPD’s head offices in Kempton Park, on the corner of Long Street and Margaret Avenue, during the week.

At the head office, plaintiffs must request assistance from the Internal Affairs/Integrity and Standards Unit.

“The complainant should be prepared to provide a statement, indicating what transpired.”

Mokheseng said the internal affairs team will investigate the matter and the investigation will include a statement of the accused officer.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, a date will be set for a hearing.

The presiding officer will give a verdict, considering the active and passive corruption.
