Two members of the Village Toastmasters in Edenvale earned their spot in an area contest to compete with winners from other East Rand clubs.

David Preece and Elaine Bonney were contest winners at the recent Toastmasters meeting on February 18.

According to Village Toastmasters president John Karle, the club had a wonderful turnout for their annual speech contest.

“The speeches were diverse, motivational and interesting to listen to. “

The winner of the English prepared speech contest was David, with his speech titled 10 000 Hours.

He spoke on the length of time it takes to learn a musical instrument and become proficient in it.

David also won the evaluation contest.

He evaluated a demonstration speech delivered by Kundai Benhurra.

“Evaluations are an important part of Toastmasters. This is where the speakers receive feedback on the quality of their speeches.

“The audience and speaker generally learn from the process,” said John.

All impromptu speakers spoke on The Last Time I Was Happy Was When…

Each contestant had only a few seconds to receive the topic and start talking on it.

The impromptu speaking contest was won by Elaine.

Elaine spoke about her experience at the a-ha concert the previous Saturday night.

The Village Toastmasters meets on the third Tuesday of every month in Elma Park, Edenvale.

“Our next meeting is on March 17 at 7 pm,” said the president of the club.
