SAPS handled mostly theft cases in 2019

"The biggest problem with the theft of motor vehicles is Ford and Toyota brands."

The biggest contributor to crime at Bedfordview SAPS for 2019 has been theft.

Capt André de Jager said the station has seen an increase in theft of motor vehicles, theft out of motor vehicles, vehicle hijackings and business robberies in 2019.

He said there have been a decrease in house robberies and truck hijackings.

“The biggest problem with theft of motor vehicles is with Ford and Toyota vehicles. With the Ford vehicles it seems to be an ongoing target. With the Toyota vehicles it seems to be for spare parts,” said de Jager.

De Jager said with the theft out of motor vehicles, the target is laptops, with two recent cases reported at the station.

“Please make sure your vehicles are locked. Make sure your alarm is on and is working,” said de Jager.

He added your vehicle should also be parked in a secure environment.

“Theft has been the biggest contributor to crime within the Bedfordview area. All kinds of theft, such as contact crimes where criminals use fake guns to scare you and take your cell phone,” said de Jager.

For 2020, Col PJ Geustyn, Bedfordview SAPS station commander, wants the Bedfordview community and the station to strive to work hand in hand to secure a relationship and have a safer neighbourhood.

“Please work with us. I urge the community to always report crime. Please report any corruption cases as soon as possible. Don’t be part of the corruption by taking bribes in order to stay quiet,” said Geustyn.
