Holiday season tips from Bedfordview SAPS

Bedfordview SAPS urges the Bedfordview community to be alert this holiday season.

Bedfordview SAPS has given residents holiday season safety tips to ensure a safe journey.

Spokesperson Capt André de Jager said communities tend to become too relaxed during the holiday season.

“You need to be aware of your surroundings while on holiday. Make sure you have all emergency numbers with you at all times,” said de Jager.

He said when leaving your home for the holiday season make sure you have safety measures in place before you leave.

“Do not leave your valuables laying around in your vehicle while on holiday. You don’t know the area that well and might be making yourself a target. Make sure everything in your car is placed out of sight,” said de Jager.

He said to avoid carrying large amounts of cash or wearing flashy jewellery in public spaces.

“Woman who carry handbags should always make sure they are fully in control of their bags, as to avoid anyone grabbing it,” said de Jager.

He added cellphones should also be tucked away and not carried around in your hand.

“Make sure you are alert when you are at an ATM. Try and only utilise ATMs in enclosed environments such inside a mall whenever possible,” he said.

Bedfordview SAPS station commander Col PJ Geustyn said he wants the community to enjoy the season responsibly.

“When you are on the road remain alert at all times. Make sure you take regular resting intervals on the road to ensure you have energy to continue on a long-distance trip.

“Most importantly, don’t drink and drive,” said Geustyn.
