Update: Oriel repairs will commence in the next two weeks

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys met with the contractors on November 18 to discuss the damage to the recently installed gabions and mattress.

An overflow of water from the bridge on Hope Hughes Avenue is suspected to be the reason for the damage to the gabions and mattress in the Oriel Stream.

The NEWS reported on the damage to the stream in the article ‘Oriel Stream is back to square one’ in the November 20 edition.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys said the contractor suspects the water coming over the top of the bridge on Hope Hughes Avenue did most of the damage to the stream.

She said they will commence within the next two weeks with repairs, which they estimate will take no more than two weeks.

“It was also agreed that a complete analysis of the water flow coming from all the surrounding higher areas, needs to be done.

This must incorporate the entire section of stream that has not been upgraded.

“It is possible that another attenuation pond needs to be created to mitigate the velocity coming into the new section of the stream,” said Humphreys.

Humphreys added the residents should not to discharge rain water into the street.

She said it is essential for every household to absorb some of the water falling on their property.

Humphreys said the residents should find alternative methods of ensuring excess water is utilised accordingly.

“Water is scarce and should be conserved as much as possible. This can be done by harvesting rain in water tanks,” said Humphreys.
