Third SA Sports Awards win for Bennies

On November 10, St Benedict's College Rowing took home the award for School Team of the Year at the 2019 SA Sports Awards.

St Benedict’s College Rowing once again took home the award for School Team of the Year for the third time at the 14th annual SA Sports Awards on November 10.

St Benedict’s has won the award in 2016, 2018 and now, nominated alongside Hoërskool Gimnasium and Groote Schuur Primary School.

“We are truly blessed with some magnificent rowers and coaches at St Benedict’s College who work extremely hard week in and week out in order to achieve the results that they do,” said College principal David Jeffrey.

He said the Sports School Team of the Year award is a reward for their hard work and commitment.

“We are extremely humbled by the award, and thankful for the acknowledgement,” said coach Darryn Roff.

Captain of the rowing team Ryan Carolin expressed his gratitude on behalf of the team for this great achievement.

“It’s an honour for our school rowing club to receive this award. It’s a reflection of the athletes and coaches’ dedication to the sport,” said Carolin.

With over 44 South African rowers in 31 years, representation at four different Olympic Games, five national rowing coaches, numerous medals at the junior u-23 Africa Championships, the school has consistently achieved at the highest level and is undoubtedly the most ‘accoladed’ rowing school in the country.

St Benedict’s College Rowing has achieved the following during the 2018/19 rowing season:

• Winners of the Gauteng Rowing Championships in November 2018, 26th consecutive title with 12 gold medals, two silver medals and winners of u-14, u-15, u-16 and u-19 age group trophies.

• First team winners of the South African Schools Boat Race in December 2018.

• South Africa’s Rowing Club of the Year in January 2019.

• Winners of the South African Schools Rowing Championships in March 2019, 26th consecutive title with 10 gold medals and three silver medals and winners of u-14, u-16 and u-19 age group trophies.

• South African champions in all five of the most prestigious events in March 2019.

• Five rowers selected to represent Gauteng in March 2019.

• First team coach appointed as provincial coach in March 2019.

• U-16 Cox represented South African Schools Rowing Union in May 2019.

• U-16 head coach appointed South African Schools Rowing Union Coach in June 2019.

• Gauteng Schools Rowing Federation appointed chairperson in June 2019.

• First Team Coach appointed as SA Junior National Coach in July 2019.

• Five St Benedict’s rowers selected to represent South Africa at Junior World Rowing Championships in Tokyo in August 2019.

• Four St Benedict’s Rowers won a silver medal at Junior World Rowing Championships in Tokyo, narrowly beaten by Germany in gold by 0.03 seconds in August 2019.
