Edenglen Cycling Club hosts second memorial walk

Motorists were urged to be more cautious when driving close to cyclists.

Edenglen Cycling Club members remembered two of their members when they hosted the second memorial walk for the late Wayne Petersen on October 28.

The walk, along Van Riebeeck Avenue, was accompanied by members of the EMPD.

Alan Warrener, secretary of the club, said the event was hosted to remember Wayne, who died after an alleged hit-and-run in October last year.

According to Warrener, the club of over 200 members lost two members, Petersen and Joseph Greenan, last year.

“We are here to make an impact and tell motorists that cyclists are people with lives and families too.”

Warrener believes cyclists are often misunderstood on the road.

The secretary was dressed in a formal blazer, shirt and tie with cycling pants, in an effort to substantiate the message.

Warrener said the Edenglen club’s philosophy is to build bridges with motorists.

Wayne’s wife, Judy Petersen, was present at the walk with the Rand Road Warriors.

The members of the walk gave her warm hugs and words of affirmation before the walk started.

Co-chairperson of the cycling club, Samantha Gailey, said they agreed to make this an annual event.
