SAPS wants to raise awareness of cancer
He said his sister was diagnosed with breast cancer.
In recognition of cancer awareness, the Social Crime and Communication Unit of Sebenza SAPS held a Cancer Awareness Project on October 25.
Sebenza’s SAPS communications officer, Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, said the project was organised with SOS Security and Ekurhuleni’s Department of Health officials.
“We noticed that police officers and the community are greatly affected by cancer.
“The purpose of the project is to create cancer awareness, and we want people to know that SAPS are not focusing on crime only.”
Department of Health officials held an informative talk and had cancer screenings and distribution of pamphlets.
“We would like to thank the Johannesburg Tembisa Taxi Association and Kempton Park Taxi Association for participating in this project,” said Tsotsotso.
Sgt Eugene Mthombeni from Sebenza SAPS shared his story of how he was directly affected by cancer.
He said his sister was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I was responsible for taking her to chemotherapy and all her check-ups.
“Her condition deteriorated to a point where she had a hole in her lower back and later passed on.”
Mthombeni’s message to the community was for them to get tested for cancer regularly.
“People shouldn’t take cancer lightly.”
He also had words of advice for those supporting cancer patients.
“Do not stop supporting people suffering from cancer because one day it could be you.”
