Elsie takes the lead in the male-dominated taxi industry

Elsie, a hardworking woman who solely provides for her family, said in the beginning it was difficult to fit in as the industry is dominated by men.

The life of a woman taxi driver has not been an easy road for Elsie Nkosi from Eastgate Taxi Rank.

She has been a driver since 1989 and still faces the same challenges she has faced since she started.

Elsie, a hardworking woman who solely provides for her family, said in the beginning it was difficult to fit in as the industry is dominated by men.

“In 1989 it was very difficult to be a woman taxi driver and it still is. I came into the working environment being the only woman,” said Elsie.

“I would not advise other women to become taxi drivers. The environment can be hostile, but I stand up for myself and fight back,” said Elsie.

“I work just as hard as the other drivers.”

Elsie Nkosi has been a taxi driver for 30 years.

She also said the working environment can get dangerous at times.

“I have seen plenty of fights. There have been fights where I found myself hiding under taxis, just not to get hurt. It gets dangerous,” said Elsie.

Elsie does about seven to eight trips daily and works until late at night.

“I have to be up at 2am to make sure I am at the rank to start trips for the day.”

Elsie is also a problem-solver.

“The taxi I drive has broken down and I had to teach myself to fix it,” said Elsie.

She reminds herself daily that despite the challenges, her income helps to take care of her family.

“That motivates me, as well as my dream to one day be my own boss.

“One day I will own my own taxi,” said Elsie.
