Praying against gender-based violence

Everyone has a higher power that they believe in and a church is one place where we all can come together no matter who you are or where you from.

Over the past few weeks the country has been faced with the rife rise of gender-based violence.

Women and organisations against gender-based violence have staged marches to raise awareness of the issue.

Ward 65 councillor Lindani Zulu, together with Jesus Joy Ministries, Clevelamd SAPS, community and ANC members of parliament Nompendulo Mkhatshwa (MP) and Thuliswa Nkabinde Khawe (MPL) came together for a night of prayer on October 3 at Denver High School in Malvern.

“We felt it was important to come together as the community in prayer. Everyone has a higher power that they believe in and a church is one place where we all can come together no matter who you are or where you from. So this prayer was to bring the community together and stand against gender-based violence in prayer,” said Zulu.

ANC MP and former student activist Nompendulo Mkhatshwa said it is important for the community to take part in the fight against gender-based violence.

Member of parliament legislature and MEC of Social Development Thuliswa Nkabinde Khawe with Pastor Simphiwe Duma, Ward 65 councillor Lindani Zulu, member of parliament Nompendulo Mkhatshwa and Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan at the prayer against gender-based violence on October 3 at Denver High School, Malvern.

“The violence against women needs to end and everyone in the community has a role to play. We need to stand together and say enough is enough. With this prayer we are reaffirming that we are going to fight against gender-based violence,” said Mkhatshwa.

Zulu said everyone needs to play a role in ending GBV.

“If we know of women being abused we need to report it and also offer support. The SAPS, church and community are here and this shows that we are all affected because violence could happen to anyone,” said Zulu.
