37-year-old convicted for driving under the influence

“We want our roads to be safe for all our residents and tough action will be taken against any driver under the influence.”

Management of Cleveland Police Station applauded a recent conviction of a man who was found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Oladimesi Akimbode will serve 15 days in prison before being deported out of South Africa after he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on Jules Street.

The 37-year-old was arrested on September 15 in a roadblock held by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department.

He was convicted on October 8 at the Jeppe Magistrate’s Court.

Although police could not specify which country Akimbode was from, Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan told the EXPRESS it was an African country.

“Our investigating officer detective Sgt Melita Masango, who investigates most of the driving under the influence cases, warned the public that she will ensure every case goes to court and suspects will get what they deserve,” said Jordaan.

“We want our roads to be safe for all our residents and tough action will be taken against any driver under the influence.”

Jordaan said the station’s management congratulated all involved for securing the conviction and will continue to support JMPD’s arrests of suspects driving under the influence.

In the months leading up to the festive season, community members will see an increase in police activity by the SAPS and JMPD.

Jordaan warned motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol, narcotics or any other substance as more roadblocks will be held.

“We have a zero-tolerance attitude towards drivers under the influence, especially with the upcoming school holidays and the coming festive season.”

Community members are encouraged to report suspicious activity, crimes or illicit activities to police as soon as possible.
