Millions of rands worth of crystal meth found in EMPD search

“The suitcase was found on the rear passenger seat, next to the suspect.”

One kilogram of crystal methamphetamine valued at R5-million was found in the possession of a foreign national travelling on the N3 highway.

The 29-year-old male, a Netherlands citizen, was arrested on October 10 for the possession of and possible dealing in an illicit substance.

He was travelling alone in an Uber-registered vehicle between the Linksfield onramp and Modderfontein off-ramp.

“Members of the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit stopped and searched a suspicious silver Kia sedan with two male occupants in it,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

The suspect was arrested after officers searched the vehicle and found 24 wrapped packages of crystal methamphetamine in his silver suitcase.

The 29-year-old male, a Netherlands citizen, who was arrested on October 10 when 1kg of crystal methamphetamine valued at R5-million was found in his possession.

“The suitcase was found on the rear passenger seat, next to the suspect,” said Mokheseng.

“The driver and suspect were taken to the Edenvale Police Station for questioning.”

Mokheseng said after further investigation the driver of the vehicle was released.

“As the investigation is ongoing the suspect is expected to face his charges in court soon.”

Mokheseng said the outcome of the investigation will determine which court the suspect appears in.

A request for comment was sent to Uber at 9.30am on October 11 requesting comment by 12noon on October 11.

At the time of going to print no comment was received.
