Over 90 arrested in two days

“No crime will go unpunished and all arrested suspects will appear in the relevant courts soon.”

In just over two days, 93 suspects were arrested by officers in the Johannesburg East Cluster.

The individuals were arrested between October 4 and the morning of October 6 by officers from various police stations and law enforcement agencies operating in the cluster.

Capt Johan Jordaan, Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, who was the duty spokesperson for the JHB cluster at the time the arrests were made, said police stations in the cluster include Cleveland, Jeppe, Hillbrow, Yeoville, Parkview, Rosebank and Norwood.

Arrests which contributed the most to the total figure were for driving under the influence of alcohol (41).

Jordaan said the JMPD was responsible for the driving under the influence of alcohol cases.

This was followed by nine arrests for assault to inflict grievously bodily harm, eight illegal immigrants arrested, five arrested for common assault and five arrested for the possession of stolen property.

As reported previously, assault cases often occur on private property and must be brought to the attention of the SAPS for action to be taken.

“Whenever possible, we arrest suspects in assault GBH cases immediately or as soon as possible.”

Jordaan explained that although illegal immigrants are not specifically targeted, they are often arrested during crime prevention operations.

The next highest number of arrests included three for shoplifting, three for dealing in narcotics, three for theft and two for common robbery.

The 14 other crimes which suspects were arrested for included possession of drugs, sexual harassment, rape, driving without a valid driver’s licence, attempted murder, negligent handling of a firearm, intimidation, fraud, business robbery, reckless and negligent driving, dealing in liquor without a valid liquor licence, residential burglary, hit-and-run and malicious damage to property.

Jordaan said Gauteng SAPS will continue to clamp down on crime and criminals.

“Would-be criminals will be dealt with accordingly,” said Jordaan.

“No crime will go unpunished and all arrested suspects will appear in the relevant courts soon.”
