Joburg Water calls on public to reduce water usage

To report all burst pipes and leaking water meters call 011 375 5555 and 086 056 2874 or SMS 076 333 5052.

The City of Johannesburg wishes to avoid limitations on reservoirs due to water demand exceeding supply.

Residents are urged to adhere to water restrictions as a result of a maintenance project conducted by Johannesburg Water.

CoJ’s MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Clr Nico de Jager, said on October 2 that there was a planned shutdown of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) tunnel system.

The shutdown would allow for inspection and maintenance of the line from October 1 until November 30.

During the shutdown the tunnel will be drained for the inspection and maintenance.

There is a possibility of no water transfers to the Vaal River System as a result.

The release stated the level-one water restrictions were already in place.

“We need to work together to ensure a continuous water supply. It is critical that water conservation remains a strong priority among residents of the city,” said de Jager.

The city relies on water supply from other provinces that feed into the Vaal Dam system.

Under level-one water restrictions residents should follow precautions.

Watering of gardens is not allowed between 6am and 6pm in summer months from September 1 to March 31.

Residents are not allowed to wash paved areas and driveways with hosepipes.

Residents are urged to report any water leaks they come across.

According to de Jager, water restrictions will be enforced by fines to consumers who contravene the Water Services by-law.

“I also urge all our residents to report any non-compliance to the JMPD hotline on 011 758 9650,” said de Jager.

To report all burst pipes and leaking water meters, call 011 375 5555 and 086 056 2874 or SMS 076 333 5052.

Water-saving tips to reduce the amount payable to the City at the end of the month:

1. Do not leave taps dripping.

2. Wash your car on the grass as this will water your lawn at the same time.

3. Shorten your showering time.

4. Use a glass of water to rinse when brushing your teeth.

5. Take shallow baths and avoid filling your bath to a depth greater than 100mm.

6. Reuse grey water to water your garden or pot plants.
