She said she has sourced two wig makers in South Africa who puts the wigs together after she has collected the hair.

“We also make special wigs for children. We recently had a request from a nine-year-old girl,” said Lucinda.

She said the wigs are given to the patient at no charge, where the patients can bring them back once they have no use for the wig anymore.

“Our donors are really important to us for the project. Without them none of this would be possible,” said Lucinda.

Lucinda said there is a coping kit for families on the Cansa website.

She said projects like this help patients who cannot help themselves.

“In rural areas people have no access, they don’t get themselves checked. Cansa also has mobile clinics to help,” said Lucinda.

She said cancer patients without medical aid get placed on a waiting list for treatment and can be on that list for two years.

“This is what Cansa does.We have care homes, we do fund-raising. We help where there is no help. We want to support everyone affected by cancer,” said Lucinda.

When donating, the ponytail should be 25cm or longer and the hair should be clean and dry.

All hair, whether dyed or treated, is acceptable.

Hair donations should be sent in a plastic bag with your name and contact details on to Cansa Head Office, 26 Concorde Road West, Bedfordview.
