Armed robber gets a 15-year jail time

Armed robber sent packing away to prison for the next 15 years.

A man, convicted of armed robbery in Cyrildene in April last year, was handed a 15-year prison sentence by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on August 26.

The court also declared the 34-year-old convict, Abel Mawelele, unfit to possess a firearm.

He will serve his prison sentence at the Johannesburg Central Prison.

“The suspect was arrested in Derrick Avenue on April 18, last year, by a security officer from Wolf Eye Security Services, after he had pointed a gun at a Chinese national and robbed him of a jacket, cellphone and a watch,” said Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan.

According to the police, Mawelele was arrested by the security officer after he was chased and fired at several times.

“Officers from Cleveland SAPS assisted, and a firearm and more cellphones were recovered.

“Criminals will get what they deserve as Cleveland SAPS strives to continue to serve the community with pride. We also congratulate the security officer who made the arrest. We urge the community to inform the police of any crime and or any illicit activities that take place as soon as possible,” said Jordaan.
