LATEST: Police officer shot, 6 arrested on Sam Green Road

“Three of the suspects were injured and taken to Tembisa Hospital."

A police officer was injured during a shootout on Sam Green Road in Bedfordview police precinct earlier today.

Capt Andre De Jager, Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson said the police officer sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The shootout took place after Ekurhuleni District Task Team received information that the six men were in the area to commit a crime. The task team, SAPS K9 Unit and EMPD Swat Unit were conducting operations in the area at the time.

De Jager said officers noticed the two vehicles; a black Mercedes and a blue Toyota, on Sam Green Road.

“The suspects exited their vehicles and began shooting at the police officers. The officers returned fire and managed to arrest all six suspects.

“Three of the suspects were injured and taken to Tembisa Hospital,” said De Jager.

He added that two firearms were recovered with no serial numbers.

He said the suspects will be charged with attempted murder and possession of an unsilenced firearm and ammunition.

The suspects will appear in Germiston Magistrate Court soon.

Updated 9pm: De Jager notified the NEWS that the police officer injured in the shootout was not a member of Bedfordview SAPS.
