Cele and his entourage comprising senior police officials, including the Gauteng provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Elias Mawela, met with community members along Maritzburg and Main streets before making their way to the Jeppe Men’s Hostel on foot.

The minister arrived to a rowdy crowd of hundreds of people at the hostel before meeting with one of the traditional leaders, Induna Khethokwakhe Mvelase.

Following the engagement, it was determined that an Imbizo would be held at a venue yet to be decided on September 8 to further discuss the wave of violence which swept through Jeppestown last week.

“We have heard people’s grumblings and agreed to host an Imbizo on September 8,” Cele was quoted as saying at the time of publication.

“There is a team that is already preparing for that Imbizo and its logistics, while the venue will be worked out.”

On a second visit to the area on September 3, Cele noted that the deployment of the SANDF in the area of Jeppestown and surrounds was not a necessary resort at the time.

“There is a difference between the situation here and that in the Western Cape, where the army has been deployed. In the Western Cape we requested the SANDF to go and face gangsters. There are no gangsters here,” said Cele.
