UPDATE: Joburg mayor condemns violent looting in parts of the city

"Such lawlessness and disregard for human life cannot and will not be tolerated."

City of Joburg mayor, councillor Herman Mashaba has condemned the voilent protests and looting taking place in parts of Johannesburg.

“Such lawlessness and disregard for human life cannot and will not be tolerated. At this stage the violence and looting appear targeted at foreign nationals and shop owners,” Clr Mashaba said.

He added that he is awaiting a full report from the Department of Public Safety and will keep the public abreast of developments.

“I am assured that the JMPD is doing everything possible to assist the SAPS in bringing an end to this criminality. I call upon South Africa’s law enforcement agencies, and especially the SAPS to deal with these criminals with urgency and restore law and order on our streets.

 

“While such action must be condemned in the strongest terms, government needs to take a hard look at itself in addressing the root causes of the ever-increasing violent protests taking place,” Clr Mashaba said.

The NSPCA has also raised its concern for animals that may become collateral damage in the current unrest and protests that are happening around the country.

“Animals are often the collateral damage in this type of unrest and we urge members of the public to be vigilant and report any concerns to the NSPCA or their local SPCA immediately,” said Meg Wilson of the NSPCA.
