LISTEN – Lt-Gen Mawela gives overview of protests in Joburg East

The EXPRESS caught up with Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, at the scene of protests in Johannesburg.

Joburg East Journalist, Tshepiso Mametela has described the situation in Johannesburg as tense.

His car has been crashed into and his camera bag was stolen earlier.

The EXPRESS caught up with Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, at the scene of protests in Johannesburg.

He said that to date over 30 arrests were made for looting and being in possession of stolen property.

Lt-Gen Mawela also stated that all shops were being targetted, irrespective of who the owners are.

The operation will continue throughout the night.

“We will continue to patrol the hotspots and acting on information from the community.”
